Grades of Jindal TMT Bars

Understanding the different grades of TMT bars is an important factor while buying the TMT bars for your infrastructure. Different projects may require different grades of TMT bars, depending on the strength and features they offer. For instance, a Fe 500 differs significantly from a Fe 415 not only in composition and yield strength but also in applications.

List of all grades of Jindal TMT bars

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) grades TMT bars according to their mechanical properties and chemical composition. Jindal TMT manufacturing facilities comply with standards referenced and provide additional information regarding the bar’s corrosion resistance, ductility, and weldability.

According to IS 1786: 2008 – BIS, there’re majorly 4 grades where most steel bars fall under, known as Fe 415, Fe 500, Fe 550, and Fe 600.

Fe 415 grade

Fe 415 TMT bars are very cost-effective and suitable for small infrastructure projects.

Mechanical properties

  • Min. proof stress – 415 N per mm2
  • Min. tensile strength – 485 N per mm2
  • Min. elongation – 14.50 %
  • Mandrel dia for bend test – up to 20 mm bars 3D and over 20 mm bars 4D

Chemical composition (%)

  • Carbon – 0.30 max.
  • Sulfur – 0.06 max.
  • Phosphorus – 0.06 max.
  • S + P – 0.11 max.

Fe 500 grade

Fe 500 TMT bars offer greater ductility and seismic stability, therefore, highly recommended for seismic prone regions.

Mechanical properties

  • Min. proof stress – 500 N per mm2
  • Min. tensile strength – 545 N per mm2
  • Min. elongation – 12 %
  • Mandrel dia for bend test – up to 20 mm bars 4D and over 20 mm bars 5D

Chemical composition (%)

  • Carbon – 0.30 max.
  • Sulfur – 0.055 max.
  • Phosphorus – 0.055 max.
  • S + P – 0.105 max.

Fe 550 grade

Fe 550 TMT bars offer higher tensile strength and are widely used across a range of large-scale infrastructures.

Mechanical properties

  • Min. proof stress – 550 N per mm2
  • Min. tensile strength – 585 N per mm2
  • Min. elongation – 8 %
  • Mandrel dia for bend test – up to 20 mm bars 5D and over 20 mm bars 6D

Chemical composition (%)

  • Carbon – 0.30 max.
  • Sulfur – 0.055 max.
  • Phosphorus – 0.050 max.
  • S + P – 0.100 max.

Fe 600 grade

Fe 600 TMT bars are among the strongest TMT grades that are typically used in heavy infrastructure projects such as bridges and marine facilities.

Mechanical properties

  • Min. proof stress – 600 N per mm2
  • Min. tensile strength – 660 N per mm2
  • Min. elongation – 8 %
  • Mandrel dia for bend test – up to 20 mm 6D bars and over 20 mm bars 7D

Chemical composition (%)

  • Carbon – 0.30 max.
  • Sulfur – 0.040 max.
  • Phosphorus – 0.040 max.
  • S + P – 0.075 max.

Final words

Based on the grades, different TMT bars are used in different infrastructure projects as per requirements. The most important aspect of collecting the right TMT grades is to choose high-quality brands such as Jindal TMT bars.
